The abbreviation emerged first in a Usenet post from 1991,and is interpreted as a combination of the abbreviations B/D (Bondage and Discipline), D/s (Dominance and submission), and S/M (Sadism and Masochism). These days it is used as a catch-all phrase covering a wide range of activities, relationships, and distinct subcultures. Thus, BDSM is a blurry definition, some may consider the use of some fashionable item, like a collar, as an BDSM activity, while others reserve such description to their sex slaves, caged in a dungeon. At its very heart BDSM is a fantasy play, a role play about power, dominance and submission, enacted with many props, like ropes, whips, flogger, bondage devices and alike to flesh out the roles of those in charge (the Doms) and those who submit (the Subs). Such kind of role play might be dangerous territory and therefor the most important term in the realm of BDSM is SSC, which is about respect and trust.
